Year 1
At Holy Trinity, our Year 1 curriculum encourages children to explore, ask questions and develop their understanding of the world through six engaging topics.
-
When We Were Little – Children explore memories, toys and childhood, learning to distinguish between past and present. They observe seasonal changes and develop their understanding of friendship, kindness and respect.
-
Carnival of Colours – Children discover Brazil, compare Rio de Janeiro with their local area and explore celebrations, including the Nativity and the Gunpowder Plot. They investigate everyday materials and express themselves through music, dance and puppet-making.
-
Into the Woods – Children explore woodland habitats, identify plants and trees, and learn about seeds, bulbs and plant parts. They develop their creativity through sculpture and learn about health, wellbeing and what matters to Muslim families.
-
Mission to the Moon – Children investigate space travel, famous astronauts and the first Moon landing. They discover the Solar System, revisit materials and develop programming skills using Bee-Bots.
-
Animal Explorers – Children identify and compare animal groups, investigate diets and habitats, and learn about humans and the five senses. They also develop map skills and design and build a windmill.
-
London Calling! – Children discover London’s landmarks, the countries and capitals of the UK, and the events of the Great Fire of London. They explore maps, compare London with Kuala Lumpur and consider what makes a good leader.
Throughout the year, carefully chosen stories, practical activities, visits and special experiences bring learning to life. Art, design and technology, music, PE and computing develop children’s creativity, physical confidence and problem-solving skills. RE, PSHE and online safety help them build positive relationships, value differences and make thoughtful choices, reflecting our caring and inclusive Christian ethos.
