WHAM Team

The WHAM Team is a group of individuals from Years 1 - 6 who represent the school on matters related to school worship.  WHAM stands for ‘We Have A Mission’. Their aims are:

  • To get pupils more involved in leading worship in school.

  • To improve worship throughout our school.

  • To ensure that no matter what people believe they can feel a part of, and benefit from, worship time.

  • To show others why God is important and to help people get to know God better.

  • To improve prayer spaces and get more people using them.

This year, the team have met with their classes to discuss collective worship times and have fed back ideas for ways to improve them. This resulted in them leading a class worship session after planning it themselves based around our value of Worship and Psalm 139. The KS2 teams led this in the Spiritual Spiral.

The WHAM Team have had further input into our Spiritual Spiral space. They audited the area and came up with suggestions for how it can be improved. As a result, a musical instrument was purchased, the water feature was fixed and the garden tidied up with new sensory plants added. There are plans to re-fence the area in the next academic year. With the roll out of Opal Play, the Spiritual Spiral has been relaunched as a quiet area to sit, talk, and reflect.

The Team worked with our Forest School lead to create natural artefacts showing our school values. They are hanging in the Spiritual Spiral. They also created an art sculpture that was displayed in Guildford Cathedral over Christmas, with the title ‘God’s Gift’.

The WHAM Team have given very positive feedback on the weekly act of worship in class, enjoying the intimacy and opportunity for more interactivity.

Some WHAM members have participated in whole school worship at Harvest, Diversity Day and Christmas, leading the prayer and reflection time at the end of the worship, using prayers they wrote as a group.

The WHAM Team have also fed back that pupils really enjoy worship which includes drama. Collective worship on a Monday is led by the Open The Book team and always includes drama which they feel really helps to engage with the worship.
